Course Overview

Course Name: ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy) to apply with depression, suicide prevention, anxiety, and trauma (6 CES)

Instructor: Dr. Cristina Bautista, Psy. D, LMFT

  • Intended Audience – Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, etc.

  • Skill level - Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced

Course Description: This comprehensive 6-hour training equips clinicians with a strong foundation in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and its practical application across depression, anxiety, trauma, and suicide prevention. Participants will gain a clear understanding of ACT’s theoretical framework, including Relational Frame Theory (RFT) and psychological flexibility, while learning how the six core ACT processes support meaningful, values-driven change.

Through a combination of instruction, experiential exercises, and case-based learning, participants will develop the ability to recognize patterns such as experiential avoidance and cognitive fusion, conceptualize client presentations through an ACT lens, and confidently apply interventions including cognitive defusion, acceptance, mindfulness, and values-based action.

The training is structured to move from foundational concepts into applied practice, covering ACT-informed approaches to depression, anxiety, trauma, and suicidality. Clinicians will learn how to select and tailor interventions based on client needs, strengthen suicide prevention strategies by addressing hopelessness and enhancing meaning, and integrate ACT principles into real-world clinical work.

 Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1.      Describe the theoretical foundations of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), including Relational Frame Theory (RFT) and psychological flexibility.

2.      Explain the six core processes of ACT and their role in improving psychological flexibility.

3.      Recognize clinical presentations of depression, anxiety, trauma, and suicide risk through an ACT framework.

4.      Demonstrate ACT-based interventions, including cognitive defusion, acceptance, and mindfulness strategies.

5.      Choose appropriate ACT interventions based on client presentation and treatment goals.

6. Demonstrate the application of ACT principles in suicide prevention, including addressing hopelessness and enhancing values-based living.

Participants will explore the six core ACT processes—acceptance, cognitive defusion, present-moment awareness, self-as-context, values, and committed action—through didactic instruction and experiential learning, including the “Passengers on the Bus” exercise, with application to case conceptualization.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM-Lunch Break

2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Continuing Education Session
This session focuses on the application of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to depression, anxiety, trauma, and suicide prevention. Participants will examine how experiential avoidance, cognitive fusion, and behavioral withdrawal contribute to psychological distress, and will learn targeted ACT interventions including values-based behavioral activation, cognitive defusion, willingness, and present-moment awareness. The training incorporates experiential exercises such as “Leaves on a Stream,” expansion practices, and observing self techniques, alongside case examples to support clinical integration. The session concludes with an ACT-informed approach to suicidality, emphasizing values, meaning-making, and risk management, followed by case integration and discussion.
